What is it?

Most pain alleviates after an injury or illness. However, when pain lasts longer than the usual recovery period or occurs alongside a chronic health condition, it’s called Chronic Pain. 

Chronic pain can fluctuate between slightly bothersome to excruciating and can be steady or intermittent. Pain is often an invisible condition, which makes it hard for people to understand. Those experiencing chronic pain can feel isolated and struggle with daily life.

Symptoms of Chronic Pain

Described as:

  • Aching
  • Burning
  • Shooting
  • Squeezing
  • Stiffness
  • Stinging
  • Throbbing

Caused by: 

  • Arthritis or joint inflammation 
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Damaged nerves 
  • Cancer 
  • Back Issues (i.e. scoliosis, slipped discs)
  • Muscle tightness/inflammation 
  • Neuralgias and Neuropathies
  • Digestive Issues (Crohns, Colitis) 
  • Fibromyalgia 
  • Diabetes
  • Injuries
  • Reproductive Conditions (Endometriosis, POCS)

Chronic Pain can often lead to other challenges like Anxiety, Depression, Mood Swings, Fatigue, or Insomnia. A study from the journal Pain states that 60.8% of the subjects who reported Chronic Pain also had depression, most of them with “severe” level symptoms.
