Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

A mental health condition causing recurring intrusive thoughts, worries, and fears, often managed through compulsive behaviors.

What is it?

Those experiencing Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have frequent thought patterns, ideas, and sensations that cause anxiety, fear, and disgust (obsessions). They often feel an irresistible urge to complete repetitive behaviours to relieve stress and quiet their intrusive thoughts (compulsions). 

Though many people experience worries or urges, OCD causes people to get ‘stuck’ , spending significant time struggling with their obsessions and compulsions (more than 1 hour per day).

Obsessions

Fears

  • Losing or forgetting something important
  • Breaking, hurting, or being violent towards yourself/someone else 
  •  Contamination, germs, dirt

Needs

  • Organization, symmetry, order, cleanliness 
  • Constant reassurance

Excessive Fixations/Concerns

  • Morality 
  • Failure
  • Religion
  • Sex 

Compulsions 

  • Rituals related to numbers (counting, or avoiding specific numbers)
  • Repeatedly checking things (objects like locks or the oven)
  • Cleaning or organizing things (washing your hands several times, arranging items 
  • Hoarding (collecting unnecessary items in high volume) 
  • Frequent mental or vocal rituals (repeating words, praying)
