Course Description

Fundamentals of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy is a unique 8-week opportunity to learn and interact with our established Numinus practitioners as they share their real-life experiences in providing integrative and transformative mental wellness. This training is open to both regulated and non-regulated providers, as well as empowered individuals looking to train in this field.

You’ll build core competencies through online pre-work, live demonstrations, group work, practice, and case-based learning. Our model of care is grounded in evidence, committed to client safety, and rooted in justice, equity, dignity, and inclusion. This unique program brings together a diversity of learners to cover all the essential skills that are needed for safe and effective psychedelic-assisted therapy. 

We will dive into:

  • The role that psychedelic-assisted therapy plays as a brief intervention within the broader healing journey
  • The arc of psychedelic-assisted therapy and its components (including therapeutic concepts)
  • Inner healing intelligence
  • Using language and inquiry that support deepening a patient’s inner experience and innate healing capacity
  • Applying psychological flexibility to acceptance and commitment therapy, ACE model, and internal family systems
  • Mindfulness, psychological flexibility, and embodied inquiry
  • Spiritual intelligence, trust, and working with altered states of consciousness
  • Burnout, vicarious trauma, transference, and countertransference

This course includes live Zoom sessions, group work, and online pre-work.

Time Commitments

  • 2.5 hours of online pre-work weekly
  • 3 hours live sessions weekly (via Zoom)
  • 45-minute small group practice

This course includes 24 hours of live sessions, 20 hours of online pre-work, and 6 hours of practice group work.

Learning Outcomes

After the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe the unique vulnerabilities of clients participating in psychedelic-assisted therapy and cultivate the awareness and practices necessary to meet these vulnerabilities safely and ethically.
  • Apply and demonstrate relevant facilitation competencies, skills, and orientations (including the Numinus care model) at an introductory level for the purposes of delivering psychedelic-assisted therapy.
  • Describe the Numinus guiding approaches within the context of integrative and transformative mental wellness as they relate to psychedelic-assisted therapy.
  • Apply facilitation skills specific to psychedelic-assisted therapy during Preparation, Medicine, and Integration Sessions.
  • Identify and respond to burnout, vicarious trauma, transference, and countertransference experienced by the health professional.

Introduction and Fundamentals

The focus for Module 1 is to provide you with an introduction to the course, as well as some of the foundational principles in providing psychedelic-assisted therapy, including the Numinus Care Model.

Therapeutic Stance

Central to building a supportive therapeutic relationship is how the health professional consciously situates themselves towards the client and the relationship, and the qualities of their presence.

Core Facilitation Skills

In this module, we will begin learning about core competencies for health professionals who deliver psychedelic-assisted therapy. We will focus on therapeutic supportive touch and embodiment-oriented competencies, including embodied inquiry.

Trauma Psychobiology and Trauma-Specific Skills

Building on what we learned in Module 3, we will begin by focusing on trauma, especially complex trauma, and important competencies and knowledge required for a trauma lens to psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Preparation Sessions

In this module, we will be learning about set and setting, preparing clients for challenges during the Medicine Session, music, and other considerations for your Preparation Sessions with clients.

Medicine Sessions

This module will focus on navigating Medicine Sessions including working with a co-facilitator and responding to emergencies while under the effects of the medicine.

Integration Sessions

In this module, we will look at some key considerations for facilitating Integration Sessions as well as a framework that we recommend employing to empower clients to get the most out of their psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Self-Care and Personal Development for Health Professionals

This module will focus on how health professionals can take care of themselves in order to provide the highest level of care for clients. As we will learn, there is a direct link between health professional self-care and the quality of care delivered to clients.

What is psychedelic-assisted therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy aims to identify and resolve root causes of mental health conditions, working by creating a mind-opening effect through the psychedelics that allows access to deeper levels of insight and healing. Although more research is required, existing evidence suggests that combining a psychedelic experience with psychotherapy can lead to lasting changes and benefits.

Will a certificate of completion be offered to participants?

Yes – for 50 hours.

If I’m unable to join a session, will a recording be provided to me? 

You will need to be able to commit to live sessions each week, however we will be able to accommodate make up sessions if there’s a week you’ll be unable to make. Please email training@numinus.com if you have any special circumstances.

Unfortunately, recordings are not provided and used only for internal quality assurance purposes.

Who can take Numinus training programs?

If you are providing or interested in providing psychedelic services to clients in any capacity, our programs will build on your skillset and benefit your practice. Our programs are open to a diverse set of professionals who are looking to add credibility, experience, and a robust skillset for providing psychedelic services.

Can I join even if I live outside of Canada?

Yes, just be mindful of the time zones! Please also note that daylight saving time in North America typically comes into effect on different dates than some other parts of the world.
