Botox for Headaches

Evidence suggests that botox can disrupt pain transmission, helping with chronic migraine.

Why Use Botox For Headaches?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is approved by regulatory agencies, including Health Canada, for the preventive treatment of chronic migraine in adults.

Chronic migraine is characterized by headaches on 15 or more days per month, with at least 8 being migraines, persisting for 3 months.

Clinical trials, notably the PREEMPT studies, have established Botox's efficacy and safety. These trials demonstrated its superiority over placebo in decreasing headache frequency and migraines in chronic migraine sufferers.

Botox injections, administered every 12 weeks to head and neck muscles, reduce headache days, migraine attacks, and severity. With successive treatment cycles, Botox's benefits for chronic migraine tend to enhance.

Approved For

If you have 15 or more headache days a month over a three-month period, your migraines are considered chronic and may make you a candidate for Botox treatment.

How Does It Work?

Botox works by blocking certain chemicals made by the body that are involved in sending pain signals to the brain during a headache or migraine attack.

Tiny amounts of Botox are injected into different areas of the head and neck that are involved in the development of migraines. The treatment itself takes less than 30 minutes and is done for patients once every 3 months. Patients can return home as soon as treatment is done.

You need at least 3 treatments to fully assess the effectiveness of Botox in treating your migraine or headaches.

Most insurance companies cover the cost of Botox treatment for chronic migraines.

The Process

Your practitioner will take a comprehensive approach to your care. We provide this specialized service at Numinus in addition to comprehensive headache management. Here is what you can expect from your practitioner:

Step 1: Referral & Consultation

Ask your health care provider to complete a referral form to our clinic. We will assess and diagnose your headaches and discuss all potential treatment options with you.

Step 2: Administration

A specialist uses a small needle to inject Botox into the muscles under the skin in various areas around the face, head, and neck. This treatment is individualized and may target the origin points of headache pain.

The treatment itself takes less than 30 minutes and clients can return home as soon as treatment is done.

Step 3: Repeat

It may take several months and multiple treatments to experience relief, but it can effectively reduce headache frequency and associated symptoms in clients with chronic migraines.
