Dr. Kate Mulvihill, PhD

Psychologist

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who focuses on mindfulness and emotion regulation across a wide range of psychological difficulties. I help my clients learn to observe their sensations, thoughts, memories, and urges; to place these emotional responses in the context of their unique histories; to practice attending to habitual responses with curiosity and compassion; and ultimately to choose new behaviours that are healthy, meaningful, and aligned with their individual values. I share my thoughts and observations openly with clients, welcome opportunities to work through issues that crop up within the therapeutic relationship, and encourage a clear progression over the course of therapy from understanding to lasting change. My clinical interests and integrative approach to therapy are informed by my hospital and university-based training in evidence-based practices such as second- and third-wave cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT), mentalization-based therapy (MBT), transference-focused therapy (TFT), dialectical-behaviour therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic therapy, but also by my experiences as a daughter, sister, reader, distance runner, musician, classicist, teacher, wife, mother, immigrant, researcher, and newcomer to the beauty and challenge of northern winters.
