Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a structured form of therapy designed to help people recover from traumatic experiences. This type of therapy is based on the idea that the mind can heal from psychological trauma in much the same way that the body can recover from physical trauma.
During EMDR therapy, clients are encouraged to focus briefly on a traumatic memory while also experiencing bilateral stimulation such as eye movements. This stimulation is thought to reduce the vividness and emotional intensity of the traumatic memory.
Studies have shown that EMDR therapy can be a highly effective tool for treating trauma. Just like when you cut your foot, your body works to heal the wound. But if the cut is constantly irritated, it can cause pain and slow down the healing process. In much the same way, if our mental wellness is disturbed by a traumatic event, it can cause intense suffering.
EMDR therapy helps to remove the blocks that are preventing healing, so that you can start to move forward and live a happier life. During therapy, a trained clinician will use specific protocols and procedures to help activate your natural healing process.
