Trauma Therapy

Specific types of therapy geared toward treating the effects of trauma.

What is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma is a term that describes the emotional aftermath of a difficult or distressing event or series of events. It can be different for everyone, as what one person may experience as traumatic, another may not.

There are a number of evidence-based therapies that address trauma. This includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy) in addition to Somatic Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.

Trauma-focused therapy can help individuals process their trauma, heal, and use it to make meaning in their life. Our therapists approach each person with a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive lens, making sure they feel safe and heard. We’ll work with you to find the best therapeutic approaches to meet your needs. To learn more about Trauma Therapy at Numinus, book a free informational call with one of our health navigators.

Who is it for?

Those experiencing conditions connected to a trauma:

Examples of trauma include:

  • A recent, one-time event such as a car crash or assault
  • Past experiences such as sexual assault, loss of a loved one, an accident, or living through a war
  • Chronic patterns like ongoing childhood neglect, needs not being met, or abuse

In the event of an emergency, it’s crucial to seek help as soon as possible. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, also known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, is available 24/7 to provide support and resources.

You can access this service by dialing 988 or by calling 1-800-273-8255.

In the case of an immediate danger to yourself or others, calling 911 should be your first course of action.

How Does It Work?

Your therapist will get to know you, your history, and your goals. Using a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques, you’ll work together to process, heal and move forward. Studies have found that between 77% and 100% of those who attend consistent, personalized trauma therapy sessions see a reduction in their symptoms.

The Process

Our team will take a comprehensive approach to your care, collaborating with other health care providers in our clinic to provide you with a treatment plan for the emotional and mental effects of trauma.  Here is what you can expect:

Step 1: Intake

We’ll start with a thorough evaluation of your medical and mental health history, and an overview of your treatment goals. Once complete, your practitioner will work with you to develop a personalized comprehensive trauma treatment plan.

Step 2: Setting the Foundation

Our approach involves building trust in a secure atmosphere, facilitated by therapists who ensure consistent support. Establishing a strong foundation of trust and safety in the session environment is integral to healing. Through this process, we not only provide a warm, consistent space but also help you develop tools and strategies for creating safety and resilience outside of the therapy setting.

You'll be guided to process and navigate through your emotions, aiding your recovery and fostering mental well-being.

Step 3: On-going Support

Your therapist will continue to support you,  closely monitoring your progress. They will make adjustments to your treatment plan if something isn’t working to ensure optimal outcomes.
